Salsa is Alive & Well in South Florida |
By PuertoRicanPete
During the last year we had many Salsa lovers complaining that the local Salsa scene was dead and that we had very few places to dance. After dancing to the Sonora Ponceña this past Saturday in Broward I have to say that Salsa is alive. More then 600 Salsa fans packed the Club Congas for a band that gets no radio time locally and that almost all local DJ’s are unacquainted with.
The same thing will probably happen again on April 16 when The Willie Rosario Orchestra takes the stage, and they too hardly get radio time.
Our local fans know their salsa. At the Sonora Ponceña presentation almost every one at the place knew the songs by heart and many were dancing in what little space was left. I end up dancing in the side room (on a carpet floor) because the main room was too crowded. Most people at the Club were not the “elite” dancers we are used to seeing in all the BTS socials but they are our best hope for the future of the salsa scene in South Florida and our allies. We can count on them so that the promoters can continue to bring in more bands and salsa dancing can continue to grow.
Not every thing is perfect of course. Part of the dance floor was being used to seat clients and the dance floor at the side room was too small; but the music was perfect. The band brought from Puerto Rico all of their musicians, singers, and Paco Lucca and his piano solos were superb. I danced to every single song with exception of the “Descarga” which Sean and Lisa Perez danced all ten minutes of it very impressively. At the end the rendition of “Hay fuego en el 23” was “off the chain”. This serves as a lesson for all the clubs and promoters. If you bring a quality product to South Florida salsa fans will respond and come out in force. They came out for the Fania All Star Concert and Sonora Ponceña; they will come out for Willie Rosario. There are plenty of salseros in South Florida that are willing to spend their money for a social with a good knowledgeable DJ or a live band concert with one of the premier bands.
